our national gallery shawl

posted by: Amy Small in cowl & scarf patterns, stargazer silk

After seeing this pattern by Tanis Gray last year, I knew we had to make one for our tradeshow booth! The pattern comes from her book, Capitol Knits, and is inspired by the LED tunnel between the 2 wings of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. This sample was knit by Susan Sheby, our resident designer and knitter extrodinaire, using Stargazer Silk yarn in Chartreuse & Deep Olive- one skein of each colorway. Being the flower child that I am, I love the daisy-like striped pattern, an unusual stitch you don't see too often. The lace scalloped edging is also beautiful. This is a perfect spring accessory and can be worn in a slew of different ways. Check out the pics below and to see the full project visit my Ravelry page here.

I think the above pic shows my favorite way to wear it!

Ladder Stitch Cowl

This is one of my absolute favorite patterns for our yarns, if not my favorite, designed by Danielle Shields. It works amazingly well with our Rolling Stone & Gypsy Garden yarns. The ladder stitch, which is created by dropping stitches, makes for a lightweight yet warm finished cowl. I’m not usually a fan of knitting our yarns too tightly because the finished result can be too heavy and the handspun trim details get lost. This loose, open stitch shows off the yarn beautifully. You’re able to see more of the yarn’s color and texture details when it’s knit this way too. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of yarn but you could use 1 skein if you want the cowl to wrap around your neck just once! The pattern is available on Ravelry here.

The above cowl is knit in Raspberry Sunset Gypsy Garden yarn.

The above cowl is knit in Rambling Rose Rolling Stone yarn.
