When I first started Knit Collage, I had a big dream to design the yarns that I wanted to see in the world. I was working a fast fashion job that had stopped bringing me joy. There was something calling me to the fiber and yarn world that I just couldn't shake. I decided to dive in, not knowing much about the industry, how to run a business or even if anyone would like the yarns!
Fast forward 15+ years later and I've gone on to design hundreds of yarns, many knitting patterns and build an incredible team. But, the part I'm most proud of is teaching thousands of knitters from around the world how to make everything from the simplest hat to the most complex sweater through our knitalongs and online classes. These makers continually finish their projects with joy and pride. Each project radiates boundless creativity!
My hope is to help you along your making journey with fantastic tutorials that come with massive ah-ha moments. I also hope to inspire your creative spirit to run wild and free with our yarns and patterns as the humble jumping off point. I care so deeply about this because on the other side of a consistent making practice is more patience, peace, creativity, confidence and so much more. Knit Collage yarns are vibrant handspun creations that reflect our happy approach to the world. Bits of ribbons, sequins, or flower appliqués are spun together with brightly colored wool, mohair and glittering Angelina fibers. We love natural fibers and primarily use wool and mohair in the yarns. Our wool fibers are from Australia, where we choose the best quality available from non-mulesed sheep. The mohair comes all the way from South Africa, where there is a rich history of gorgeous mohair fibers. In some of our yarns, we also use a teeny amount of sparkly fibers called Angelina, that are made from polyester. These fibers come in a large range of iridescent and glittery colors from the USA.
The spinning process is enormously time intensive. To spin one skein of our yarn, it takes the spinner around 2 hours. On top of the spinning, all of the fibers you see in our yarns are also hand carded. Some colorways have over 10 different fiber colors carded together to achieve the final result. This creates a beautiful melange look that is impossible to duplicate on machine. Even though the raw materials are the same, no two skeins are completely alike because of the intense handmade process that goes into each and every skein.
